Qutb-ud-din Mubarak Shah (14 April 1316 – 1 May 1320)
Qutb-ud-din Mubarak Shah Khalji (14 April 1316 – 1 May 1320) dethroned the minor sultan Shihabuddin and himself became the Sultan of Khalji Dynasty. He resorted to populist measures, such as abolishing the heavy taxes and penalties imposed by his father, and releasing thousands of prisoners. Soon he started drinking, listening to music, merry-making, and distributing gifts. He came under the influence of Hasan who was originally a Hindu shepherd but was converted into Islam. He was raised to the position of Prime Minister and given the title of Khusrau . The sultan became heavily influenced by Khusrau and started have a relationship with him. With the help of Khusrau, Mubarak defeated the rebel vessel states of Devagiri and Warangal.
However, more and more the sultan became infatuated with his lustful behaviors and mainly with Khusrau. He was allowed to have a separate cavalry of his own, 40,000 strong consisting mostly of the Bharvars (Shepherd caste) of Gujarat, a tribe to which Khusrau himself belonged. And Kahsrou was allowed to leave in the palace of Sultan. Sultan Mubarak was warned of Khusrus's intentions by his former tutor, but paid no heed to the warning. On the night of April 14, 1320, the troops of Khusro entered the palace. Khusro himself caught hold of Mubarak Shah by the hair and one of his followers stabbed him to death. The head of Mubarak Shah was cut off and thrown into the courtyard.
The sultan appeared to be evil in nature and the following was said about his , "He gave way to wrath and obscenity, to severity, revenge, and heartlessness. He dipped his hands in innocent blood, and he allowed his tongue to utter disgusting and abusive words to his companions and attendants.... He cast aside all regard for decency and presented himself decked out in the trinkets and apparel of a female before his assembled company..."
