Ala ud-din Sikandar Shah Tughlaq (22 January − 8 March 1394)

Muhammad bin Firoz finally became sultan of Dehli on 31 August 1390 by defeating Abu Bakar Shah. However all through his reign he was beset with rebellions from his amirs. Gujarat declared independence. Rajput chiefs in Etawa stopped paying taxes.  The wazir, Islam Khan forced them to submission. But as soon as Islam Khan returned to Delhi, they rebelled again. The sultan marched in person, defeated them, and levelled the fort of Etawa with the ground. He then proceeded via Kanauj to Jalesar, and built a fort there, which was called after him Muhammadabad. However due to a false report that Islam Khan was planning a rebelion, the sultan came back to Dehli and put Islam Khan to death. The Sultan then went to Mewat to quell the rebellion of Bahadur Nahir who was about to attack Dehli. He was defeated and sultan retired to Muhammadabad.  The Sultan was ill at that time and asked his son Humayun to crush Shaikha, the Khokar, who had rebelled and captured Lahore. But before the Prince left

Shams ud-Din Iltutmish (AH 607-633/1210-1235 CE)

Shams ud-Din Iltutmish was the third sultan of Mamluk dynasty in Delhi sultanate. He was a slave of the first sultan Qutb-ud-din Aibak (I am not discussing him as it was not known if he issued any coin and also the second sultan Aram Shah for the same reason). Later he became Aibak's son-in-law and the governor of Badaun. After the death of Qutb-ud-din (playing polo) and Aram Shah (deposed by Iltutmish) he became sultan on in 1211 till his death(May 1, 1236). Incidentally, in my tale, this is the first person to have a natural death!
As he became sultan, he had to fight in multiple fronts, Nasir al Din Qabacha in Multan, Ali Mardan Khilji in Bengal, Taj al-Din Yildiz in Ghazni and the Hindu princes across north India. He subdued the Hindu princes, defeated and killed Yildiz and defeated Qabacha. Then the army of Genghis Khan appeared for the first time on the banks of the Indus River pursuing Khwarazmid ruler Jalal ad-Din Mingburnu who flee to the Punjab. Mingburnu requested an alliance with Iltutmish against the Mongols. Iltutmish refused, not wishing to get into a conflict with Genghis. As Mingburnu retreated towards Parsia, he plundered Sindh by defeating Qabacha. Iltutmish later defeated the Mongol army. Iltutmish then marched against Bengal sultanate and after multiple battles, finally captured Lakhnauti , the capital of Bengal. He then defeated Qabacha, who drowned while trying to escape. Finally he fought and defeated the Rajput's. But he was forced to retreat with heavy losses from Gujarat by the ruling Chaulukyas.
In 1236 Iltutmish died, and was buried in the Qutb complex in Mehrauli. He fought throught his sultanate but laid the foundation for his successors. He was the recipient of khilat from the Abbasid Caliph Al-Mustansir which confirmed his independence and add religious and political legitimacy and prestige.

This is a historically very important coin and was struck only in Dehli with only AH 632 (1234 AD) being the known date on this coin type ie a year before the death of Iltutmish in AD 1235. The marginal legend purports to confirm that the issuance of these tanka's was funded by the land tax levied on the residents of Qanauj (Ujjain) and non-believers (Infidels).
