Muiz ud-Din Bahram (AH 637-639 / CE 1240-1242)
Muiz ud-Din Bahram (May 1240 – 15 May 1242) was the sixth sultan of the Mamluk Dynasty. He was the son of Shams ud din Iltutmish and the half-brother of Razia Sultan. As mentioned in earlier post, Bahram declared himself with the support of forty chiefs. His sister tried to regain the throne with the aid of her husband Altunia, governor of Bathinda. They were eventually arrested and executed. Bahram Shah was raised to the throne by the nobles on the condition that he would hand over all the powers of the state in the hands of his naib-i-mamlakat.
Bahram felt offended by naib-i-mamlakat Aitigin, and got him killed. He started conspiring against the powerful nobels. He tried to imprison the nobels conspiring aginst him, failed. He banished some from Dehli and demoted some. He even put to death some of them.
In winter of 1241 the Mongol force invaded the Indus valley and besieged Lahore. Mongols butchered the town before withdrawing from the Delhi Sultanate. The sultan was too weak to take step against them. Finally he was murdered by his own army in 1242 (died 15 May 1242). After his death, he was succeeded by his nephew Ala ud din Masud, a son of his half-brother Rukn ud din Firuz.
