He was the son of Bughra Khan, the Independent sultan of Bengal, as well as grandson of Ghiyas ud din Balban. Balban made his older son, Prince Muhammad Khan as his successor. But Muhammad died in the Battle of Beas River that took place between the Chagatai Khanate and the Mamluk Sultanate in 1285. After the death of his son, Balban nominated his grandson, Kai Khusro son of muhammad, as heir apparent. However after his death, the nobles nominated Qaiqubad as Sultan.

He used to drink wine even in daytime. The police officer in charge of Delhi Fakhar-ud-Din’s son-in-law, Nizam-ud-Din became his right hand but he just misguided him.

However, they were reconciled and a lasting peace treaty was agreed between Bengal and Dehli Sultanate. On return to Dehli, On his return to Dehli, he transferred Nizam-ud-Din to Multan, seeing the latter's hesitation, the Sultan ordered him to be poisoned. He appointed Jalal ud Din Firuz Khalji as a new commander of the army. But Jalal-ud-Din Firuz marched his army to Delhi. Qaiqabad was murdered and his infant child, Shamsuddin Kayumars was made sultan for a few months, with Jalal-ud-Din as a guardian. Later Kayumars was also killed.

With the death of Kayumars, the Mamluk dynasty rule came to end. Jalal ud Din Firuz Khalji founded the Khalji dynasty.
