Muiz ud din Qaiqabad (1287– 1 February 1290)
Muiz ud din Qaiqabad (1287– 1 February 1290) was the tenth and penultimate sultan of the Mamluk dynasty. He was the son of Bughra Khan, the Independent sultan of Bengal, as well as grandson of Ghiyas ud din Balban. Balban made his older son, Prince Muhammad Khan as his successor. But Muhammad died in the Battle of Beas River that took place between the Chagatai Khanate and the Mamluk Sultanate in 1285. After the death of his son, Balban nominated his grandson, Kai Khusro son of muhammad, as heir apparent. However after his death, the nobles nominated Qaiqubad as Sultan.
When he became the king of Delhi, he could not control himself. He was just 18 years old at that time. He started to spend his time in the company of beautiful girls. He used to drink wine even in daytime. The police officer in charge of Delhi Fakhar-ud-Din’s son-in-law, Nizam-ud-Din became his right hand but he just misguided him.
As his father Bughra Khan declared independence in Bengal, Qaiqabad declared war and met his fathers army near Bihar. However, they were reconciled and a lasting peace treaty was agreed between Bengal and Dehli Sultanate. On return to Dehli, On his return to Dehli, he transferred Nizam-ud-Din to Multan, seeing the latter's hesitation, the Sultan ordered him to be poisoned. He appointed Jalal ud Din Firuz Khalji as a new commander of the army. But Jalal-ud-Din Firuz marched his army to Delhi. Qaiqabad was murdered and his infant child, Shamsuddin Kayumars was made sultan for a few months, with Jalal-ud-Din as a guardian. Later Kayumars was also killed.
With the death of Kayumars, the Mamluk dynasty rule came to end. Jalal ud Din Firuz Khalji founded the Khalji dynasty.
